How to Pack a Dry Bag That Stays Dry

A dry bag only works if you close it right. Three rolls, the air burped out, and what to keep where.

How to Pack a Dry Bag That Stays Dry

Leave room to roll

Never fill past about three-quarters. You need slack fabric at the top to fold the closure at least three times — that triple roll is what makes the seal.

Burp the air

Press the air out before you roll, or trap a cushion of air on purpose if you want extra buoyancy. Either is fine — just be deliberate, because a half-inflated bag won't seal cleanly.

Layer by when you'll need it

Last in, first out. Keep the layer you'll want on the water — a warm top, snacks — near the opening. Phone and keys go in the small dry bag or a float-backed pouch, clipped in so a capsize doesn't lose them.
