Cold Water: Respect It, Enjoy It
Cold-water shock is fast and real. Understand it, layer for it, and never go alone.

Cold-water shock comes first
The danger in cold water isn't slow hypothermia — it's the gasp reflex in the first minute. Enter gradually, get your breathing under control, and never jump into cold water you don't know.
Layer the extremities
Hands, feet and head lose heat fastest. A wetsuit alone leaves them exposed — neoprene socks, gloves and a hood are what extend your safe time in the water.
Never alone, always seen
Swim or paddle with someone, tell a person on shore your plan, and carry a whistle. A wetsuit adds buoyancy but is not a lifejacket — wear a PFD where conditions or rules require it.
